If you think being a parent in today’s world is hard, take a moment to consider what it is like for children. With increased pressure from school, distractions with social media and the normal teenage angst, it is no wonder many young people are feeling lost.
In fact, it is commonly reported that being a teenage is harder than being an adult. Their bodies are changing physically and mentally, many are not getting enough sleep and on top of all that, trying to decide what to do with the rest of their life is something that can cause real concern.
Every year, Dragons’ Denbacked franchise theatre school Razzamataz, decides on a new theme to best help its students. This academic year, every school across the UK will be focussing on ‘What will you become?’ #BrightFuturesAtRazzamataz.
MD and Founder of Razzamataz Denise Hutton-Gosney explains: “We have lots of students who have gone on to make performing arts their careers, but equally, we have many that have used the life skills they have learnt at Razzamataz to find the confidence to pursue a wide variety of jobs. Our role is to empower young people to have a positive mindset and to build resilience.”
As Razzamataz prepares to celebrate its 20thanniversary in 2020, we have many inspiring stories from students who have attended one of our schools. Tom Taylor former student at Razzamataz West Cumbria is now a history teacher in Newcastle, Alice Ghorst, former student from Razzamataz Carlisle is a solicitor and Robyn Gracie, a Razzamataz Dumfries student is now a Razzamataz teacher.
“I loved my time at Razzamataz and although I didn’t realise it at the time, it really helped me to achieve what I’m doing now by giving me lots of life skills and confidence,” says Tom Taylor former student at West Cumbria. “Having performing skills are really useful in interviews and being on stage and coping with stage fright definitely helped to control my nerves during exams. Having the support from my Principal and teachers at Razz certainly gave me the confidence to believe I could achieve the goals I had set out for myself. Razzamataz is such a positive experience and I have so many fond memories of my time there.”
Professionally we have students in numerous West End shows including Hamilton, Matilda and School of Rockas well as students starring in TV shows and on the radio. Their performing arts success comes from the strong curriculum that Razzamataz offers which includes equal emphasis on dance, drama and singing across the commercial and classic musical theatre genres. For students looking to be accepted into a performing arts college, there is an additional class called Razz Project Intense that focusses on the specific dance techniques that will be required.
Creating confident and socially aware young people should ideally start as early as possible. It has been proved that performance-based activities have positive effects on the youngest children and research has shown how receptive babies’ brains are to music, movement and touch from birth. To support this research, Razzamataz offers classes for babies and their parents with the Early Years franchise programme.
“Razzamataz believes that all children can achieve whatever they set their minds to with support from those closest to them,” adds Denise. “Our schools are inclusive and safe environments where they can start to explore what their futures look like. With determination, resilience and hard work, we teach students that if they can dream it, they can achieve it.”
