Supporting an elderly person in their home is about so much more than helping with daily tasks. It’s about meaningful conversations, enriching their day and appreciating the full life they have lead.

When PerCurra’s Registered Care Manager, Joanne Townend, learned that a client had spent many happy years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nottingham she had an idea. After speaking to his daughter and the University she arranged for him to visit the campus and be reunited with former students; some of whom are now lecturers. Back in the 1981 he planted a sapling in the University grounds as part of the University’s centenary celebrations. The sapling had been grown from an acorn found by his children in 1971 at the foot of the legendary Major Oak in Sherwood Forest. The former lecturer, now 90 years old, enjoyed seeing how this sapling had matured into a majestic oak tree.

Every detail of the visit was carefully planned by Joanne and her team to bring joy and evoke special memories for their client. University staff welcomed him and provided refreshment and there were smiles all round.

Occasions like this mean so much – not just to clients and their family but to the whole team at PerCurra.
